Adele Island

Located in the Holcat Ocean, Adele was home to the first group of people created on Fabella. It was a paradise shaped like a flaming torch surrounded by crystal clear water and the most biodiverse ocean life on the face of the world. Named after Lord Lukis’ departed love, Adele’s diverse natural scenery, warm tropical climate, an abundance of plant life, oceanic surroundings, and active volcano made it a trading mecca for the Fantasian Republic throughout most of Fabella’s history.

Adele was a tropical island located out in the middle of the ocean, far away from all the other continents of Fabella. It was not hard to understand why the early inhabitants of this small, seemingly insignificant island thought they were alone. This humid, vibrant, tropical land was shaped like a burning torch and sat right on the equator. Gigantic flowers and mushrooms stretched up to the sky; during the monsoon season, it rained for weeks without ever stopping, and hurricane-force winds ripped giant flowers and trees out with ease, roots and all. Some of the most poisonous and lethal creatures crawled along the dense jungle and swam along its winding shores.

Adele was the cradle of Fabella’s civilization. It was the place where intelligent life first rose up from the sandy shores and began the journey of life.

Geography and Environment

Mountain Ranges

Adele boasted two mountain ranges, the Caye Mountains and Great Silver Mountains. Mount Kabam, the only volcano on the island, sat at the northwest tip. Though not a mountain, Blood Cliff loomed high on the jagged west coast of the island. Early merfolk lived between Mount Kabam and Blood Cliff because these geographic landmarks impeded their migration, and they were too afraid to swim around out of fear they would be attacked by sea monsters lurking in the deep.

Rivers

All rivers flowed directly into the Holcat Ocean, which surrounded the island. The largest river is the Sharakan River, which snaked up from the base of the Caye Mountains all the way to the Great Silver Mountains. The unique river though, was the Crimson River, which was a striking blood red.

Climate

Adele’s climate was typical for the tropics, although temperatures and humidity tended to be less extreme because of near-constant trade winds from the east. Summer highs usually reached around 88 °F (31 °C) during the day, with the temperature reaching a low of 75 °F (24 °C) at night. Winter day temperatures were usually around 83 °F (28 °C); at low elevation, they seldom dipped below 65 °F (18 °C) at night. Most of Adele experienced only two seasons; the dry season and the wet season.

Flora and Fauna

The soil in Adele was so rich that flowers and mushrooms could grow to be tall as trees. These acted as a shelter for early people before the invention of the tent. These gigantic florae were studied by Fabellan biologists for years and were protected plants because they were so rare. Anyone caught chopping down giant fungi, or flowers faced heavy fines and even jail time.

Because Adele had an array of endemic flora and fauna, Adele had more endangered species and lost a higher percentage of its endemic species than any other island in Fabella.

The climate around the coast could range from dry tropical (less than 20 inches or 510 millimeters annual rainfall) to wet tropical; on the slopes, environments ranged from tropical rainforest (more than 200 inches or 5,100 millimeters per year), through a temperate climate, to alpine conditions with a cold, dry climate. The rainy climate impacted soil development, which largely determined ground permeability, affecting the distribution of streams, wetlands, and burrows.

History

Creation Age

Adele earned its rightful place in history as the site where people and animals were first created. The first person created on Fabella was Col.

Emit went on to redeem himself for his actions by leading his colony to thrive over the years. His leadership was credited for the development of hanging tents and widespread animal domestication in the area.

Civilization Age

In the year 500, the earliest known record of the wheel originated from Adele. It was created in the exclusive human tribal colony of Eriku, which enjoyed a short period of wealth and prosperity before their numbers were absorbed into the Adele Colony led by Emit. Trolls in the Mount Kabam region of the island also began training canines, starting with alphyn pups.

Dynasty Age

Lora Thinker, the daughter of Fantasia’s second president Ephias Thinker, arrived on Adele in the middle of the Age of Dynasties. She founded the settlement of Runcasolis on its shores. The Republic of Fantasia quickly adopted Adele as a colony, though the republic had few plans for the island initially. Governors of Fort Runcasolis were first sent to the island as a form of political sabotage, meant to send rivals away where they could do little harm. Because of this, Runcasolis struggled for several years under poor management and leadership.
