Hadhayosh (hahd-hae-yosh)

Hadhayosh

Hadhayoshes never stayed in one place for long. They were constantly on the move, and never returned to the same region twice in the same year. During bad weather, they would huddle together in a circle. The alpha male and all the children were in the center of the circle, while the females made up the outer edges. Depending on the severity of the storm, the cow numbers could be decimated. Black eyes, brown mane, and sharp horns made predators wary of attacking a hadhayosh, but their fear was unjustified. In fact hadhayoshes were one of the the most skittish animals on Fabella. Even the subtle crack of a twig could send them running. Hunters had to be careful not to alert them when creeping up to kill one. Hadhayoshes ran in groups called “sounders.” Alpha male hadhayoshes were extremely territorial. They killed every male born into the sounder so that there could only be one sounder in a given region. Baby hadhayoshes were called “calf.” The only male calf allowed to survive was one the alpha choose at birth to replace him. When the young male reached maturity, he killed the alpha male and took over as leader of the sounder.
